Two Shows in One at GATS Pride & Polish

National contest award winner in working combo
was Jonathan Eilen, Hampton, MN, with the 2010
Black & Orange Peterbilt 389/2007 Mac Dump.

A record 71 beauties turned up for the Great American Trucking Show’s Pride and Polish contest, staged in the exhibit hall of the Dallas-based show in August. There were many of the show circuit’s favorites. And that was appropriate for this was the last in a five-show national contest to find the top trucks in the country.

At GATS, awards were passed out for the national winners, with prizes and trophies going to Paul Voigt/Night Train Trucking, St Cloud, MN, for Limited Mileage Combination with his 1999 Blue & Black Peterbilt 379/2004 Great Dane Reefer. The combo goes under the name “Disorderly Conduct.” Taking Limited Mileage Bobtail was Randy Stroup/First Class Trucking, Lewisport, KY, with his 1986 Candy Vibrance Peterbilt 359, which won “First In Class.”

The national contest award winner in working combo was Jonathan Eilen, Hampton, MN, with the familiar 2010 Black & Orange Peterbilt 389/2007 Mac Dump called “Iron Afflicted.” And winning the fourth national title for working bobtail was one of the spectacular Sandvick trucks by Bill & Marie Sandvik, Valley Center, CA, with their 2005 Brown & Red Peterbilt 379.

Adding to the excitement of the beauty show was a three-day film shoot by Speed Channel’s American Trucker with its flamboyant presenter Rob Mariani. During the awards ceremony, he presented a special award from the American Trucker show to Sam & Shawn Helt, Pleasant Hill, MO, for the beautifully restored and customized 1965 Jade Green Peterbilt 281 “Helt Up.” Mariani says he’s more than partial to older trucks, and this low-window model 281 was just the truck to catch his attention.

A broad selection of truck makes were represented, including an International Prostar that took third place in the working bobtail class – quite the achievement for a sleek aerodynamic truck. Macks were well represented, from Eric Hardage’s 1963 B-83 to Gerry Kissinger’s ’91 Superliner, which picked up second place in the national contest for working combination. Freightliners also featured in the winners circle, and, of course, Peterbilts and Kenworths were well represented.

The Speed Channel show is set to air October 6 at 7pm Eastern.

  1. This show would have been exciting, as many truckers with their trucks have participated to that. Jonathan truck really looks great in black and orange color. Even I wanted to design my truck something like that too.
